Delicious homemade pop tarts made with sourdough for a unique twist on a classic treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup fruit preserves
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flours, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the sourdough starter and cold water until the dough forms.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into rectangles.
  7. Place a dollop of fruit preserves on half of the rectangles.
  8. Top with the remaining rectangles and seal the edges with a fork.
  9. Brush with the beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Let cool before serving.

Notes

  • Use any flavor of fruit preserves you like.
  • Experiment with different types of flour for varied textures.
  • These pop tarts are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.
