Cozy Pear Crumble

A warm, comforting, and surprisingly simple pear crumble recipe perfect for a chilly afternoon. Features tender pears topped with a buttery, spiced crumble.

Ingredients
  

Pear Filling

  • 3 pounds pears about 8 pears, use a mix of Bosc, Anjou, or Bartlett; ripe but firm
  • 0.5 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar adjust based on pear sweetness
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour for thickening
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoon fine sea salt

Crumble Topping

  • 0.75 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 0.5 cup salted butter softened

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare an 8x8 inch baking dish or similar oven-safe dish.
  • Peel, core, and slice pears into about ½-inch thick pieces. Place in a large bowl. Add vanilla extract, ½ cup granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ⅛ teaspoon salt. Toss gently to coat the pear slices. Pour into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.

  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together ¾ cup flour, ½ cup granulated sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon salt.

  • Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients. Use your fingertips, a pastry blender, or two forks to work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of butter remaining.

  • Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the pear mixture in the baking dish.
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the pear filling is bubbling around the edges.
  • Let the crumble cool for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.

Notes

For an extra nutty crunch, add ½ cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping. A pinch of nutmeg or cardamom can also enhance the flavor. Adding orange or lemon zest to the pear filling provides a bright, fresh note.
