Equipment

  • bowl good-sized
  • Melon baller
  • Chopstick, skewer, or sturdy toothpick for poking holes
  • Plate
  • paper towels
  • Platter for serving

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 6 Large Granny Smith apples or other firm, crisp apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala
  • 4 tablespoons Fresh lemon juice
  • Pretzel sticks skinny ones work best; sturdy toothpicks or small wooden skewers can be substituted for handles
  • Marzetti Old Fashioned Caramel Dip or your favorite store-bought or homemade caramel dip (or substitute chocolate ganache, peanut butter dip, cream cheese fruit dip)

Optional Toppings

  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chopped nuts peanuts, walnuts, pecans
  • Shredded coconut
  • Sprinkles
  • Crushed graham crackers

Instructions

  • First things first, grab a good-sized bowl and fill it with some cold water. Stir in the fresh lemon juice. This is going to be our little spa bath for the apples to keep them looking fresh and vibrant!
  • Next, give your apples a good wash and make sure they're nice and dry.
  • Now for the fun part! Grab your melon baller. Scoop out little round balls of apple from your Granny Smiths. As you scoop each one, drop it right into that bowl of lemon water you prepared. This keeps them from oxidizing and turning brown while you're scooping the rest. Try to get as many good balls as you can from each apple!
  • Once you've scooped out all the apple balls, gently lift them out of the lemon water. It's super important to dry them really well at this stage. Lay them out on a plate lined with paper towels and gently pat them dry. Any excess moisture will make it harder for the pretzel stick to stay put and might thin out your caramel dip.
  • Time to add the handles! Take a chopstick, a skewer, or even just a sturdy toothpick and carefully poke a small hole into the top of each apple ball. Don't go too deep! Just enough to get the pretzel started.
  • Now, gently insert a small pretzel stick into each hole. You want it snug enough to stay, but don't force it so hard it breaks the apple ball (or the pretzel!).
  • Arrange your adorable Mini Caramel Apple Dippers on a platter around your open container of Marzetti Old Fashioned Caramel Dip. Serve them immediately and watch them disappear!

Notes

These are designed to be devoured right away for the best texture. If storing leftovers, the apple may soften and the pretzel may lose crunch. You can prep apple balls ahead of time and store submerged in lemon water in the fridge for up to a day; drain and dry well just before assembly. Firm, crisp apples work best. Ensure apple balls are patted very dry after the lemon bath. Poking a hole before inserting the pretzel makes it easier.
